It’s hard to be present in the moment. There is so much else going on in the mind and heart competing for attention. “I need to start this, I need to finish that.” Thoughts that are constantly weighing on the mind.
How many times have you been with someone and your mind has wandered somewhere else, to another time, or place, or person?
Why is it so hard for us to just be in the moment, and enjoy it, without having it affected by all the other things we have going on in our busy souls?
We live the majority of our lives not thinking about what we are currently doing, but what we still need to do, and never really savouring the moment.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) advised to:
“Take benefit of five before five: Your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied, and your life before your death”
(Narrated by Ibn Abbas and reported by Al Hakim)
The advice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has never been more relevant. In essence, it is conveying the message of being present in the moment.
Stop wasting time, thinking about what you could’ve or should’ve done, or what you can and should be doing, and simply be present in the moment, before it passes you by.
Don’t limit the definition of that moment. The moment is not a singular episode. Let it be your youth, health, wealth, free time, and your life itself.
Any of these “moments” could come to an end without any warning. So enjoy the moment you are in. Be present. Be conscious.
Enjoying the moment
It can be hard
It is difficult to see
But don’t be overwhelmed
For there is blessing in what you have
The moments that are calm
The ones that make you smile
Where you find a sense of peace
They are easy to enjoy
But when you become tired
And the moment is not so calm
And there’s irritation inside you
This is where you have to look for it
Look for the blessing in the moment you are in
It is there,
And if you search for it,
It will appear
Maybe not at first,
Because of the irritation inside you
But if you search for it,
It will appear
Whether it’s an abundance of loved ones around you
Or other’s to help you correct your ways
If you search for it,
It will appear
But first you must do something
It is hard for you to do
Something you have to remove
For it is blocking your way
It makes your sight blurry
And your view quite hazy
Your perception becomes skewed
And the image is distorted
But you feel entitled to have it there
This thing that’s blocking your way
That makes you feel uneasy
And limits your understanding
But you need to remove it
Put it aside
And out of your way
So that you can search for that blessing
The irritation you feel inside you
It prevents you from finding the joy
From enjoying the moment
From searching for that blessing
So place irritation aside
Enjoy the moment you are in
And if you go to search for it now
You will find that blessing
